VOLUNTEER AT EDGE RADIO

CAN I VOLUNTEER AT EDGE RADIO?
Sure you can! Edge Radio is a volunteer-based organisation. Most volunteers (including most of the people you hear on air) got their start as a behind the scenes volunteer. Behind the scenes is what it sounds like: it’s all the knitty gritty running the organisation, and our volunteers are what makes Edge Radio such a great place to be. During your shift you’ll be greeting people, helping them find who and what they’re looking for, performing reception and admin duties and helping out wherever there is a need around the station.

After a while, committed behind the scenes volunteers will get further opportunities in the music library, in writing, video and content creation, membership, sales and promotions, producing and presenting. Check below if you’d like to see the current volunteer positions that are available.

HOW MUCH TIME IS INVOLVED?
We’re looking for volunteers that are able to commit to a regular half day each week for a minimum of 3 months. Ideally we are looking for volunteers who are interested in extending their involvement at the station beyond this.

I’VE GOT A GREAT IDEA FOR A PROGRAM / I’D LIKE TO BE A PRESENTER. HOW DO I GET ON AIR?
Checkout the Apply For a Program section on the website for more information. Read the new application FAQ carefully. If you’re new to radio, you will have to do Edge Radio’s broadcast training course, which is compulsory for all those who wish to get on air. More information on the training course can be found here.

WHAT MAKES VOLUNTEERING AT EDGE RADIO SO GREAT?
  • It’s fantastic way to develop your communication skills and self-esteem.
  • One of the more exciting volunteer options out there.
  • Interview bands, artists and other members of the community.
  • Leads to more exciting opportunities, such as conducting live broadcasts from music festivals, gigs and other community events and meeting famous people!
  • Facilitates industry networking and opens the door to a career in media.
  • Have input into the music played on Edge Radio.
  • Have fun, make new friends and develop your music knowledge!
PLEASE BE AWARE...
Edge Radio is always keen to take on new volunteers. But you need to be aware that volunteering your time in a media organisation is no walk in the park. It can be hard work. We all have as much fun as we can, but much like any other workplace, it’s serious business much of the time. We will try our best to help you find your feet at Edge Radio, be it on air or behind the scenes. However the style of volunteering at Edge Radio may not work for everyone. As long as you know going in that this could be the case you’ll be all the better for it.
A NOTE TO THOSE UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE
We're a big believer that young people can decide if they are ready to volunteer. Edge Radio will not send parental / guardian permission forms home for signature. It is up to YOU to inform your parents / guardian that you wish to volunteer, and we strongly advise that you ask permission and provide this webpage of information before filling out the volunteer expression of interest form.

Station management and education staff at Edge Radio are required to have the relevant working with vulnerable people / children checks. These checks are not required for general volunteers. We strive to provide a safe and fun working environment for all young people. However, Edge Radio is progressive in nature and often tackles topics surrounding gender, sexuality, race, religion, disability, drugs and alcohol. We have strict policy on these kinds of topics and believe they should be discussed and debated in a educational manner.

Edge Radio station management is always happy to discuss any concerns parents / guardians might have renegading this or any other station policy.
