Program Profile: No Sleep Team

18/10/2016

Picture
No Sleep Team hosted by Perri Deane, is a hip hop radio show that has been on-air since December 2014. No sleep Team has evolved over the years to now playing the latest hip hop music from rising talents to some of the bigger names in the industry that you have grown to love. So let’s get to know a little bit more about Perri and his  experiences.

Other than your show, what’s your favourite Edge Radio Program?
Edge Radio Recommends, I hear a cool kid hosts that, no, no I kid. My favourite Edge show is a tough one, I am quite fond of all the programs we have on edge but one that stands out to me is The Party Line, I’m not big into politics but the girls do such a great job with their show. It’s put together so well and is one of the best produced shows I think we have on Edge.

Do you have any special moments that you’d like to share?
One of my biggest highlights was interviewing a local Melbourne DJ/Producer/Artist Juñor. He was such a nice and humble guy and to this day has been my favourite interview I have done, he was so grateful about the whole thing and it was just such a chilled experience.

What do you think radio will be like in 10 years?
I think radio wont exist in 10 years, well it will but not how we have it now. There wont be any FM or AM, it will just be all on the World Wide Web with everything else.

Our Studio Becomes A Star On Rosehaven

18/10/2016

Picture
The Edge Radio studio has taken on a life of its own. This week the ABC premieres the new comedy program Rosehaven, starring Luke McGregor and Celia Pacquola. During late May the production crew dropped by and filmed a chunk of the program in our little studio. So when you see scenes in a community radio station on Rosehaven, that’s us!

Word on the street is that the Edge studio will pop up later in the series, maybe episode four or five. But we encourage you to watch every episode naturally.

Rosehaven premieres October 12 at 9pm on the ABC.

Edge Radio Recommended: The Laurels – Sonicology

18/10/2016

It’s been four years since The Laurels released their critically acclaimed debut album “Plains“, and many wondered if they’d ever hear from the band again. Their social media accounts were blanketed with questions about the whereabouts of new material and band members were regularly interrogated by drunken concert attendees, culminating in numerous requests to “stop f*@!ing around and release something!”

So what have The Laurels been doing in that time and why has it taken so long for something new to surface? The relentless touring that followed the release of “Plains” saw the band pushing the limits of what they could achieve as a live band and yearning for a new approach in the studio. Growing particularly fond of golden age hip-hop and with classic albums from GZA, Nas and Gang Starr dominating the touring van’s stereo, the rawness and grittiness of hip hop production felt new and inspiring to a band that had become renowned for their lush sonic textures.

Following hard drive crashes, lineup changes and family tragedies, the band built their own studio space that they dubbed Volume Plus (a reference to the sign stolen from an abandoned petrol station next door) and a year and a half of intensive sonic experimentation began. Dropping money on old hardware samplers, synthesisers and stacks of bargain bin record finds, they began employing the techniques used by the old school hip-hop producers they’d been inspired by. Oh, and they have a new drummer. With the departure of Kate Wilson, Jasper Fenton joined the band early in 2015.

Their second release, “Sonicology” is a result of their determination to reinvent themselves and their desire to produce something not bound by time or genre. The term “sonicology” refers to the healing power of sound and music, making particular reference to the manipulation of sound in order to reach elevated levels of consciousness. Fans had a taste of the record in mid-2015 with first single “Zodiac K“, a synthesiser odyssey with hard hitting drums and spoken word that showcased a step away from the guitar heavy psychedelia that the band had become known for.

“Reentry” opens the album with its rollicking drumbeat as church bells ring out over blistering fuzz guitar riffs. “Hit And Miss” retains elements of the band’s poppy songwriting m0ments with its multi-layered guitars and sun-drenched harmonies, while title track blends soul driving bass lines with multi-layered beats and filtered Moog bass lines.

The rest of “Sonicology” is just as varied – synths swell over warped guitar track, funk and disco guitars chime over synthesisers while brass instruments wail in the distance.

The Laurels have overcome adversity (and hundreds of annoying questions) to craft an eclectic collection of music which they are thrilled to share with you.
