HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

It's that time of the year! Even the Music Department needs a rest, so we're taking a few weeks off to recuperate from what has been a relentless 2019. Fresh Edge Radio Recommended releases will recommence late January - for the next few weeks we'll be spinning some of our faves from the last 12 months.

Thank you to each and every one of you for your support - you're all amazing. Have an excellent holiday season if you're lucky enough to have some time off, and massive thanks to those of you that work all the way through - we see you and you are hugely appreciated.

Rob’s bass is pub fuzz groove
It’s shells on the floor and leaning against the wall with one hand while you have a piss
thinking maybe you can take that guy?
only one way to find out
oh wait, he’s smiling…

Danny’s drums are a clinic in reservedness
4 on the floor
This guy’s Charlie Watts in the looking glass
every hit a necessity
solid, not flashy
like the lead street tough in a 70’s flick
he don’t say much, but it counts

and then there is Brendan
be-gloved lead mensch in this quartet
singing with earnest street poet confidence
his message coming in on the weird-wire
hard to describe
best to just listen and see
a pub punk priest

We are very pleased to have these boys back on the streets

Formed around Craig Dermody, a songwriter who provides you with speed-dial access to his head and his heart, and rooted in 90’s slacker and Flying Nun sounds, Scott & Charlene’s Wedding have finally returned with their new EP. Three years since the release of their shambling classic, Mid Thirties Single Scene, they present: When in Rome, Carpe Diem.

EDGE RADIO RECOMMENDED: Sudan Archives - 'Athena'

Violinist, singer, songwriter, and producer Sudan Archives has released her debut full-length album Athena.

The new record is about duality, and is a testament to Sudan Archives’ dynamism and fluidity as an artist. Since her debut EP, Sudan Archives has been navigating the spaces between genres including R&B, violin playing inspired by Northeast African fiddling, and experimental electronic music. Athena showcases this fusion of styles she makes entirely her own.

Athena follows Sudan Archives’ debut EP Sudan Archives (2017) and the Sink EP (2018), which garnered wide acclaim from NPR Music, The Guardian, Pitchfork and The New York Times, among others. For the album Sudan Archives worked with a cast of musicians including producers Washed Out, Paul White (Danny Brown, Charli XCX), and Rodaidh McDonald (The xx, Sampha, Adele). The result of her opening up to collaboration is her most wide-ranging music to date; as she puts it, the EPs are “like a haiku of what the album is".

Deeply ambitious, sometimes vulnerable, and always beautiful, Athena is a powerful statement from a musician who has always resisted easy categorisation.
