For Melbourne tripwave trio Fade Evare, the creation of their debut album, Welcome Back, was a chance to reflect. A celebration of the power of community, vocalist Mira Holleman describes Welcome Back as “very much a looking inward, but also being appreciative of the people around you, kind of album.” The album’s beauty lies within the intersection of Mira’s moving vocals with producer/older brother Tori Holleman’s bass-led, often-hazy production. With the line-up rounded out by keyboardist Madeleine Magee Carr, Fade Evare have crafted a debut album full of lush, layered electronic soundscapes, reminiscent of acts like Massive Attack and The xx.
Welcome Back is a memorable introduction to Fade Evare’s world, one where they weave together elements of trip-hop, pop, and dance music. Cloaked in mystique, Welcome Back sees Fade Evare channel feelings of both melancholy and euphoria at different points. The album rhythmically pulsates, perfect for a post-club debrief, or soundtracking the embers of a night that’ll live on long in your core group’s memories.
The chemistry of the Holleman siblings is evident across Welcome Back. It also marks a new synergy within their respective musical journeys. Tori’s previously been part of Australian electronic act Retiree, while Fade Evare is the first time Mira’s stepped into the lead vocalist role. Tori explains, “I thought it’d be cool if she took the reins, and wrote more of the lyrics through a younger lens.” He adds that working with Mira “reminded me a little bit of what I was getting out of [the creative process] when I first started making music.” With a lot of the writing and recording of Welcome Back taking place in a home studio, the music came naturally. Free from time constraints, the band were able to harness the energy of regular sibling hangouts, and carry it into the sessions.
On record Welcome Back is intimate and oft-restrained. The live setting, though, sees the band transform into a kaleidoscopic, floor-filling electronic act. The band’s DIY debut gig, held earlier this year saw them go all out. Further welcoming audiences into the world of Welcome Back, they seamlessly integrated lighting fixtures with their synths, creating a true audio-visual experience.
Continuing to build on their burgeoning live reputation, the band recently supported revered English electronic group Mount Kimbie at iconic Melbourne venue The Forum. Looking forward, there are also plans in place for more shows across the rest of 2025. While Welcome Back is the beginning for Fade Evare, it’s set to be a project music fans speak about reverently for years to come. This is one movement you’ll want to be part of from the very start.
