TEENS, Lutruwita/Tasmania’s favourite noisy post-punks, have emerged triumphant with their anticipated second album, ‘NEGATIVE ENERGY’, out today on No Sleep Records / Psychedelic Salad Records.

While their first album may have taken the best part of a decade to manifest, TEENS haven’t sat still since. The year following the release of their internationally acclaimed debut ‘TEENS’ (July 2024, No Sleep Records) has been filled with relentless gigging, including prized support slots for artists such as DZ Deathrays, Crywank (UK), Hard-Ons and a sold out Dark Mofo appearance with The Peep Tempel, all while putting the final touches on their triumphant second full-length release ‘NEGATIVE ENERGY’.

First album ‘TEENS’ (2024) was a document of resilience and tenacity, forged in the face of obstacle, injury, distance and community collapse, and featuring echoes of TEENS incarnations of the past. On ‘NEGATIVE ENERGY’, the band exist in almost confronting stability, inhabiting their final form, the trio of Shawn Arnold (vocals/guitar/synth/percussion), Alex Daven (drums/percussion) and Jono Tate (vocals/bass/organ).

‘NEGATIVE ENERGY’ opens with the album’s two singles – the ominous, disdainful ‘Like An Animal’, and the writhing, bewildered ‘Shallow Grave’ – and moves through moments of delirium, confusion, alienation, despair and deep introspection. Questioning a reality that seems as distorted as their guitars, TEENS interrogate their existence, peeling away layers of flesh and mind, and drilling intensely into specific moments in a quest for understanding.

TEENS’ existential uncertainty is painted vividly and viscerally on ‘NEGATIVE ENERGY’. The album showcases a band that is adept at capturing their volatile ruminations in a way that masterfully blends grit, vulnerability, intricacy and rawness. As always, TEENS may appear chaotic on the outside, but holding everything together is an expertly applied command of tension and energy.

Returning to the idyllic Studio Sola Paradiso, for ‘NEGATIVE ENERGY’, TEENS teamed up once again with engineer Joss Thomas – he and Arnold working together to record the album, before handing it over to the iconic Mikey Young for mixing and mastering.

‘NEGATIVE ENERGY’ is available digitally and on 12” limited edition Plastic Flesh vinyl from TEENS’ Bandcamp and the Psychedelic Salad Records webstore in Australia. Overseas the record is available in Europe through Psychedelic Salad Records’ European outlet, in the UK via Dirty Filthy Records, and in the USA via Echodelick Records.

Continuing TEENS’ run of striking artistic partnerships, Serbian-based artist Davor Gromilović’s 2021 work ‘Murder In Front Of The Hotdog Eater’ makes a perfect companion to ‘NEGATIVE ENERGY’’s hedonistic bewilderment. Meanwhile, the band have commissioned beloved nipaluna/Hobart creator Molly Turner for a custom hoodie design – pre-orders for the ‘Devil’ print wardrobe staple are open now.

With a live show that is equal parts disorienting and rejuvenating, TEENS have amassed a rabid following across their home state. The band will satiate local cravings at their ‘NEGATIVE ENERGY’ album launch party at Hobart’s The Grand Poobah on Friday, October 10th, joined by Crab, Bextexta, Chamberwoman, Fun Size Duncans and Raspberry Terrapin – TICKETS.
