lutruwita/Tasmania art-rock quartet Silver Fleet Ships have emerged triumphant with their soaring debut album Before Never, After Forever.
Years in the making, Before Never, After Forever very nearly didn’t exist. After moving house, band leader Spiro Noutsatos unpacked his studio to discover the majority of the album files were corrupted. Rather than admit defeat, he regrouped and started afresh with a renewed sense of purpose. The result is an album of ambitious stylistic breadth and palpable emotion.
An intensely personal body of work, Before Never, After Forever is a bold and intricate excavation of a mind in turmoil. Noutsatos’ dynamic, orchestral arrangements usher us from moments of sparse, minimalist introspection through to thunderous explosions of anguish. Constantly shifting, diligently painted textures bear witness to moments of shame, anxiety, frustration, detachment, grief, and ambivalence.
The album’s eight songs, wildly distinct from each other sonically, remain tightly bound by the struggle between the fundamental need to be seen, and the desperate wish to disappear completely. Acutely vulnerable, yet gracefully statuesque, in Silver Fleet Ships’ most impassioned moments their catharsis is euphoric. Of the album, Spiro says: “I hope anyone that hears it, hears themself in it and is able to relate to it. I hope it helps you feel less alone.”
Before Never, After Forever features Spiro Noutsatos on drums, bass, guitar, vocals and synth, and Mathew Olivier on keys and guitars, with former band member Adam Davison’s effected drum parts appearing on two songs (‘Gimme Moonlight’ and ‘After Forever’). The album was recorded and mixed by Noutsatos, and mastered by Donovan Miller.
Silver Fleet Ships’ debut album and first vinyl release Before Never, After Forever is available now – pressed by Suitcase Records and released through the conscientious False Peak Records. The album’s delicate artwork was designed by the multi-talented Bek Binnie, of nipaluna/Hobart hardcore act Threats.
Live, Silver Fleet Ships are Spiro Noutsatos, Mathew Olivier, Ryan Lynch and Jason Graham. The band’s unique blend of melody and grit will be on display at their album launch celebration on November 22nd at The Grand Poobah in nipaluna/Hobart.
