Willi G’s debut record is a love letter to the land that raised him, and a strongly worded email to the thieves that find themselves in charge of it. It’s an exploration of the feelings that arise from being a beneficiary of colonisation, a descendant of invaders, and a member of a fledgling amalgamation of confused all-comers. It’s an attempt at finding the balance between quiet, contented wonder and a passionate rage.
Clean Air is a reminder to breathe, to be kind to yourself, and to gently lead the fire where it needs to go.
Of the album, Willi G says: “Written primarily on the lands of the Muwinina people, and recorded on Woiworung country, this album is somewhat of an ode to colonial guilt. This land that I love and that holds me dear should never have been mine to hold. It’s a stolen land, a land that has been wrenched away from its rightful owners, treated as a resource for financial gain, and voided of its inherent beauty and worth. I am the beneficiary of a heinous theft, living in a luxury afforded to me by my forefathers sins. I write to sooth my shame, to hold my penance, and with the hope of helping myself to understand my place in this theft, and my role in undoing the wrongs of my ancestors.”
