Beloved Naarm musician and label head Nat Pavlocic has released her new album, Big Heart. Nat shares, “‘Big Heart’ [the title track] is really the heart of the album. It’s about not wanting to feel one way then say another; a big heart doesn’t mean nothing if I’ve got a fake tongue.”
Big Heart, is an introspective exploration of love in all its forms: for friends, for family, for lovers, for self. Featuring Jen Sholakis (Jen Cloher, EBAGC) on drums, Anika Ostendorf (Hachiku) on bass and Snowy on guitar, Pavlovic has crafted a family band of all-stars who’ve all contributed to the recording process and will form her live band, with the addition of Ellie Ware on guitar. All songs are mixed by Snowy and mastered by Nao Anzai (The Belair Lipbombs, The Teskey Brothers), with additional vocals by Emma Russack and Ada Duffy, and strings by Chloe Sanger.
Album singles ‘Lucky’, ‘Thirty Flirty’ and ‘Promise To Try’, marry the soothing folk-adjacent style heard on her 2021 surprise-drop debut solo record, You Can’t Take It When You’re Gone, with expanded elements, exploring synths and drum machines. Pavlovic’s enticing, distorted vocal delivery flows like a diary entry, evoking a sense of living-room intimacy and tender connection, balancing grit and texture with space with epic washes of sound.
After growing up in the hills of Perth, surrounded by bush and birds and bugs, at 18, Pavlovic moved to the big smoke, immersing herself in the Perth music scene. “Slowly fighting my way in with my band, Dianas. There weren’t many girl bands in Perth back then, I could count them on one hand. But there was a community there and we were part of it.”
In 2015, Nat moved to Naarm to study sound and was inspired to launch her own indie record label, Blossom Rot Records, alongside co-founder Sophie McComish (Body Type). The label has become home to artists such as Loose Tooth, Cool Sounds, The Vovos, Bad Bangs and Snowy Band. Nat is also an international touring musician for artists such as Jen Cloher, RVG, and Hachiku, a manager at Naarm’s Bakehouse Studios, and a founding member of Dianas.
