Birthed in sun-bleached Meanjin/Brisbane, Platonic Sex are a queer alt-rock band who don’t sleep together, promise. Their songs are exercises in catch and release, vulnerable lyrics and guitar-driven melodies which swell and crash with emotion.
Platonic Sex are delighted to announce the release of their debut EP, Grip. The band’s first fully-fledged body of work, its six tracks are exercises in holding space for others and for themselves. Bridget, Ryan, Jane and Mikki invite their listeners into the world of Platonic Sex, where toughness and vulnerability nestle side-by-side, joy and anxiety intermingle, and where friends old and new are always welcome to stay the night.
The EP’s titular track, “Grip” saw the band invite a troupe of friends – including members from fellow Brisbane acts VOIID and Hallie – to help them record vocals for its comforting refrain: “What am I panicking for? Nothing’s gone.” The ‘panic’ refers to the feeling of falling in love with somebody and instinctually tightening your grasp on them, scared of an inevitable future loss. Repeated, the lyric turns into a kind of affirmation: it calls for mindfulness, presence and gratitude for relationships as they are, no matter how they might change.
Writers from The AU Review and TheMusic named Platonic Sex as highlights of BIGSOUND, and follow-up single “Exhausted Competing For You” saw them spend four weeks in 4ZZZ’s Most Played Chart.
Platonic Sex are: Bridget Brandolini (they/them) on guitar, Jane Millroy (she/her) on guitar, Mikki Hain (she/her) on bass, Ryan Hammermeister (he/they) on drums, and everyone on vocals.
